Importance of Nutrition Education
Eating well can make a positive difference in a student's ability to achieve in school. Healthy, well-nourished children are better able to reach their full academic and physical potential, are absent less often, and have higher test scores. Teaching nutrition to children early on, and providing nutrition education frequently throughout their educational experiences, is key to developing healthy eating habits. Nutrition concepts need to be reinforced throughout the year, and students can learn about food and nutrition as part of many subjects, including math, science, social studies, physical education, and health. It is important that Wisconsin students participate in interactive, relevant nutrition education that is integrated into core subjects in the curriculum. - Planning Curriculum in Nutrition, Wisconsin DPI |
Importance of Garden Education
If your kids don't their peppers and cucumbers, get them into gardening. Children who grow their own vegetables are much more likely to eat them than those who don't. And establishing healthy eating habits early in children's lives is on the of the most effective way to stem the rising tide of obesity. Gardens also offer up fonts of opportunity for adopting a place-based, science-as-wholes approach, underlining the interrelationships of everything. Every garden is a mini-habitat unto itself, replete with plant producers, plant munchers, and all those creepy-crawly decomposers. So they offer powerful, firsthand insights in the flowing, cycling web of life. - How to Raise a Wild Child by Dr. Scott Sampson, p 111 |
